Shop with a Plan

If it’s time to update your wardrobe but you’re worried about your limited budget, there is a way to make sure you get what you need without breaking the bank. Rather than wander into sales and spontaneously choosing this sweater or that skirt, you need to have a clear shopping plan.

The most essential part of any shopping plan is to know what you already have. You need to set aside time to do a realistic inventory of your existing wardrobe. Decide what needs to go to charity and what can be stored until next season. Only then will you see what you actually have to work with.

Now you’re ready to write a shopping list based on the holes in your wardrobe. Start with any essential pieces, such as skirts, pants, blouses, and dresses. If you’re lucky, you’ll only need to pick up one or two essentials and a few seasonal fashion accessories and you’re be set. Make sure that you include notations about colors and styles so that you purchase things that work with your existing wardrobe rather than stand alone pieces.

Now head to that computer and start comparison shopping. Look for sales, discounts, and coupons at stores that you trust. If you know the sizes and styles that work for you, go ahead and order online. Otherwise, take your annotated list and head out to the stores. But remember — you’re only shopping for the things on your list, nothing else.
