It is always a heartwarming feeling when a community comes together to remember someone who has made a difference in their lives as well as their community. There are so many people who dedicate so much time to making their community a better place and it is always nice when their efforts are not only remembered but continued within the community.

The city of Rockville will host the very first Carl Henn Memorial Bike Ride in remembrance of the Rockville resident, Carl Henn, who passed away in July of 2010. Henn was a longtime resident and was known as a civic activist, he made a very large impact on the city and his contributions will not be forgotten by the residents.

Henn was 48 when he passed away and he lived in Rockville for more than 20 years. He had a vested interest in civic activism and he served on both the City’s Environment Commission and the Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee. He was also the president of the Hungerford Civic Association. Henn was also in instrumental character in the creation of three community gardens within the city.

The Rockville Bike Advisory Committee has planned and will host the bike ride. The ride is an 11 mile memorial ride beginning at city hall. The planned route will make stops at four community gardens and the registration for the event is free and will take place on at the starting point.

Carl Henn was loved by the community and made a huge impact on many people’s lives. He worked hard to make his community a better place for people to live in and his memory lives on with the people in Rockville. This bike ride will serve to remind the people of Rockville to always work for something you feel strongly about. This memorial ride is proof that one person can make a huge impact on the community and the people around them.

Now that it is summer time, it is a great time to pull out that old bike and fix it up so you can go for a ride. If you haven’t used your bike in a while and it is looking a little shabby, you might want to pull out your bicycle repair manual to see if you can fix any of the minor problems the bike may be facing.

Once you have fixed up all of the minor repairs, you can then customize it to give it a fresh new look. A new paint job will have the bike looking good as new. Before you decide to paint it, you will need to choose a paint color and the correct paint. It is also a good idea to look up step by step painting instructions that way you can make sure you do not mess up any of the gears. After a fresh coat of paint, add whatever accessories you desire such as streamers, a bell, baseball cards or just keep it classic.

When the weather is nice, take your bike out for a ride. Instead of driving to the ice cream shop around the corner, grab your friends and some bikes and bike on over there. You can also go for a neighborhood cruise or if you are more adventurous you can take it out to some trails to explore the outdoors.

Biking is a great form of exercise and will help you keep fit and feeling good. When riding a bike, it does not need to be strenuous exercise but can simply be a nice short ride. If you are looking for something a bit more exhausting though, you can mountain bike or cycle, both are very common forms of exercise and both are fun.

So instead of sitting indoors all day and watching television, find that old bike of yours, fix it up and go for a ride.

Halloween is the time of year that starts off the holiday season with a crazy punch. The roots of Halloween go back to Celtic and Christian holidays but today, for most people, it is just about having a good time. The party has a spooky feeling about it but depending on what one decides to be for Halloween it can be light and fun.

It is always fun to see what people are going to pull off for costumes each year. There are some who like to incorporate current events into what they are wearing for the party. Then there some people who just sift through endless Halloween costumes to see if something interesting is found. Others go with a certain mood or favorite character. No matter what people decide to do, not everyone is going to be the character from the movie Halloween .

The funniest thing is spending Halloween with little kids. They don’t really know what is going on but they have a fun time dressing up in their favorite characters. It is fun to see a family of three boys go as Alvin and the Chipmunks or a little girl dressed up as the princess she truly is.

Currently, the are almost 60 Off-Broadway plays being performed in New York City. Most of the plays you’ve never heard of and some you have. These Off-Broadway musicals, play or revues are performed outside of the Broadway theatre district and are more of an intimate affair because they have less than 100 seats, but Off-Broadway shows are what keeps theatre alive and well in New York. Plus, some Off-Broadway shows have had subsequent runs on Broadway and they may feature well known playwrights, actors and the ticket price is considerably less expensive than attending a real Broadway show.

Many Off-Broadway venues are located throughout the city, so thay are very convenient to attend if you’re staying at any of the great hotels , plus the venues have many restaurants around them for you to have either dinner or lunch before or after the show, and no matter where the location, you’ll not only end-up enjoying a great performance, you’ll be able to see parts of New York City you would’ve missed otherwise.

Some of the current Off-Broadway shows are: two by A.R. Gurney the ‘Black Tie’, a comedy performed at Dramaat 59E59′s and ‘The Grand Manner’ a drama performed at Mitzi E. Newhoust Theater, you might remember Gurney for ‘The Dinning Room’; ‘Family Week’ by Beth Henley, this is a dark comedy performed at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, it takes place one year after the main characters death of her son at a recovery center in the desert, and her mother, daughter and sister arrive to participate in ‘family week’. Henley is known for her hit play ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’, starring Holly Hunter in the 1989 film version; ‘Ideal’ by Ayn Rand, a comedy, believe it or not, performed at 59E59′s theater C. This play is about the world’s most famous actress who has been accused of murder and 6 of her devoted fans are challenged to stand by their idol in her time of greatest need. ‘Ideal’ will close in July, so you better catch this one fast. Another play, one you’ll recognize, which is closing in June and needs to be seen soon, is ‘Our Town’ by Thornton Wilder and is being performed at Barrow Street Theater.

Off-Broadway shows may vary in quality and in performances, but you never know if you’ll be watching the next Broadway hit.
